The GeekSeek Capture the Flag (CTF) is a fun and competitive event that enables participants to improve and practice their cyber security knowledge and expertise. In this full-day event, participants will be asked to work in teams to solve complex computer security challenges. These activities will range from beginner to moderate levels of difficulty and will test the endurance of each team’s knowledge and skill. Furthermore, it will assess how well teams can work together under pressure. This training platform continues to be a popular event, as it provides both professionals and students an opportunity to improve and learn from one another.

In this year’s CTF, teams can expect challenging problems from a range of topics such as forensics, cryptography, programming, networking, reversing, Google-Fu and web.

Challenges will test participants’ knowledge with some well-known vulnerabilities within the past year. Also, GeekSeek will follow GeekWeek’s space theme, meaning the challenges will feature various pieces of space trivia and referencing.

The Canada Science and Technology Museum, in partnership with the Communications Security Establishment, is offering a free hands-on encryption exhibition for the month of October. You will have the opportunity to explore how encryption works, and how it affects our lives – from its role in war, to how we rely on it to keep our modern digital communications secure.

This exhibition allows you to:

• Learn to encrypt and decrypt secret messages;
• Understand how an Enigma machine works;
• Try your hand at logic puzzles and games.
